Our average growing season rainfall is about 12 inches or about a third to a quarter of what a humid climate receives. Therefore the farmer plants about a third to a quarter as much as would be planted in a humid climate and hopes that the timing and distribution of growing season precipitation will provide enough moisture to get a reasonable crop. It's really a crap shoot.
